FAQ – MiniJungle® Living Wall Technology
Common questions about Xponge® Matrix, JungleMat, and modular living wall systems. Get answers from the material science perspective.
Product & Technology
What is Xponge® Matrix and how does it replace soil?
Xponge® Matrix is a polyurethane-based open-cell foam planting substrate developed by MiniJungle®. It replaces traditional soil by providing a precisely engineered pore structure that automatically regulates the solid-liquid-gas balance plants need. The DualFlow™ dual-channel structure features macro-pores (0.5–2mm) for air circulation and micro-pores (0.01–0.1mm) for water retention, achieving what soil does naturally—but optimized for vertical applications.
How thin can a living wall be with JungleMat?
JungleMat (沁植毯) achieves full plant coverage at just 1cm substrate thickness, compared to 8–15cm for traditional soil-based systems. This makes it the slimmest living wall system available, ideal for projects where depth is constrained—such as elevator lobbies, column wraps, and retrofit installations.
What is DualFlow™ technology?
DualFlow™ is MiniJungle’s proprietary dual-channel structure within Xponge® Matrix. It creates two independent pathways in the same substrate: macro-pores for air circulation and rapid drainage, and micro-pores for capillary water retention. This resolves the fundamental conflict between water retention and aeration that causes root rot in traditional vertical gardens.
Can Xponge® Matrix support large plants?
Yes. Despite being only 1cm thick, Xponge® Matrix can support plants with up to 60cm canopy diameter. This is possible because the open-cell foam structure provides continuous root anchorage and consistent moisture delivery, unlike soil which compacts and channels water unevenly in vertical orientations.
How long does an Xponge® living wall last?
Xponge® Matrix has a structural lifespan of 5+ years without degradation. Traditional soil-based living walls typically experience 30–50% plant mortality by year 3 and require major replanting. With JungleMat’s pre-cultivation process (≥95% coverage before installation), the living wall maintains its designed appearance for years with minimal maintenance.
Installation & Applications
Is JungleMat suitable for high-rise buildings?
Absolutely. JungleMat was specifically engineered for vertical and high-altitude applications. At 8–12 kg/m² when saturated, it’s 70–80% lighter than soil-based systems, meeting the strict load budgets of high-rise facades (typically 30–50 kg/m²). The modular anchoring system is wind-rated, and our reference project at Shenzhen Anxin Financial Center demonstrates performance at 30 meters height.
What is pre-cultivation and why does it matter?
Pre-cultivation means plants are grown in JungleMat modules under controlled factory conditions until they reach ≥95% coverage before on-site installation. This eliminates the ‘ugly phase’ of newly installed living walls, ensures plant health from day one, and dramatically reduces on-site maintenance during the establishment period.
How does irrigation work with JungleMat?
JungleMat integrates with smart drip irrigation systems. The DualFlow™ structure ensures water is distributed evenly through micro-pores while macro-pores prevent waterlogging. For commercial projects, we recommend automated fertigation controllers with remote monitoring. For residential JungleFrame Mini, a simple manual drip line is sufficient.
