We are proud to announce that minijungle® has been awarded an “Excellent” quality rating by the Shenzhen Landscaping Association in their 2024 annual assessment for landscape engineering projects — the highest honor in the category. This recognition was earned through our work on the Shenzhen University Xiliu Lake Campus Slope Greening Project.

The Challenge: A 3,000m² Steep and Complex Terrain

The project site was a formidable 3,000-square-meter steep slope with highly complex topography. Terrain of this nature presents extreme construction challenges and demands an exceptionally high standard for long-term ecological recovery. The minijungle® team applied our deep expertise in polymer material science to deliver a solution that goes far beyond conventional landscaping.

The Approach: “Place and Grow” — Replacing Soil, Not Amending It

Our approach is fundamentally different from conventional methods. Rather than amending existing soil, minijungle® focuses on replacing it entirely with a scientifically engineered substrate. By pairing our proprietary Xponge® Bio-Growth Matrix with carefully selected, drought-tolerant native plant species, we achieved rapid, stable, and self-sustaining greening of the slope. This project now stands as a new benchmark for urban ecological restoration in China.

The installation was remarkably streamlined. Nearly 3,500 square meters of slope protection were completed in approximately one month. Unlike traditional hydroseeding, our QinZhi Wall Garden System is resilient against adverse weather during installation, ensuring project timelines are met without compromising quality.

A Three-Phase Journey: Stability Proven Over Time

The long-term performance of the vegetation — documented across three distinct phases — is the most compelling proof of our technology’s durability.

Phase 1 — Immediately after installation: the slope with freshly planted vegetation using the Xponge® Bio-Growth Matrix.
Phase 1 — Installation Complete
Phase 2 — Four months post-installation: robust plant growth across the entire slope structure.
Phase 2 — Four Months Post-Installation
Phase 3 — One year later: the slope has matured into a dense, self-sustaining green ecosystem.
Phase 3 — One Year Later: A Self-Sustaining Ecosystem

The Core Technology: Xponge® Bio-Growth Matrix

The success of this project is rooted in our proprietary Xponge® Bio-Growth Matrix — a revolutionary bio-based polyurethane sponge featuring a multi-cell architecture. Developed in-house with foundational research support from Tsinghua University, Xponge® functions as a block-shaped, highly plastic artificial soil substrate that is naturally degradable and entirely safe for the environment.

The matrix effectively prevents rainwater erosion and soil runoff, providing a highly stable anchoring environment for plant roots during the critical establishment phase. This ensures that plants can thrive long-term within the lattice beam slope protection structure.

Xponge® features a stable pore structure with an exceptional porosity of 95%, and its advanced DualFlow Structure maintains a stable air-to-water ratio of 3:7 even when fully saturated — ensuring that sufficient oxygen is always present to prevent root rot. Its extraordinary water absorption capacity allows it to hold more than 100% of its own volume in water, creating an ideal microenvironment for sustained plant growth.

This award is a meaningful validation of minijungle®’s technical expertise and engineering quality in ecological restoration. We will continue to deepen our commitment to building living infrastructure — bringing nature back into every corner of the urban environment through our Urban Ecology Partners network.
